I would LOVE a book club! (says the librarian 😁) I read The Other Olympians after your recc and it was great. That combined with the NPR/CBC podcast Tested (and which I heard you on an episode of!) made for a really informed 2024 Olympics experience.
oh you know I would be down for a book club! This year, I am looking forward to finally reading The Other Olympians by Michael Waters, which I added to my tbr upon your recommendation :)
I heard Riesman on the excellent Second Captains podcast and then immediately put my name on a library hold. I only got about 1/3 of the way through before I went home for the holidays but picking it up again next week. I actually really don’t enjoy wrestling nor am I interested in it but it’s just excellent on McMahon and Trump and the world we live in
These are all excellent choices and might go on my own newsletter TBR. Are you skimming or are you doing a deep read with notes for all? I have so many research books I want to read, but I get lost in overload these days.
A little of both! If I’m reading for pleasure I don’t tend to take notes unless something stands out. If I’m reading for work, I sometimes jump to the most relevant chapters and pull notes from there.
Ok, thanks for giving me that permission to skip around. A lot of our academic nonfiction has that frame and sometimes I just want to get to the meat, lol.
Oooh, I can't wait for the CrossFit book! I was really into that close to the beginning. It was always culty, but it's been wild watching it grow more and more MAGA and Christian the last few years.
I’ve been working my way through the nonfiction works of a sports writer and while I appreciate his writing, the straight white perspective is getting a bit bring so I’ll have to check these out
But in that vein, if you have t checked out Football for a Buck by Jeff Pearlman, I’d recommend it if you want to be angry at Trump (I mean.. more so than normal). It’s about the USFL but also about how Trump took over something good and destroyed it while trying to make it his own which was just slightly terrifying

Ahhh it’s so good!! Can’t wait to hear what you think about it

Yes! I don’t care about wrestling either but Josie is so smart and such a good writer, and it makes it easy to understand why I should care about this
She sold the book so well on the podcast and I trust SC’s taste. Looking forward to finishing
I’ve actually reached out to her to see about having her join us for a book club zoom! Hoping we can make it work
Would love it! Finishing that book and getting yours out of the library are next up

Brb, adding all of these books to my list 😂

It’s a great book! We used it as a comp title to sell our book.
I am definitely up for a book club and these that you listed aren’t on my list so I’m excited to add to said never-ending list.
